Kidstir November 2018 Gobbling Good Fixings Review

Kidstir ships in a cool green box.

This month's theme of Gobbling Good Fixings is just in time for Thanksgiving! The 3 recipes for this month are:

  • Zesty Cranberry Sauce
  • Popcorn Bread
  • Awesome Apple Stuffing

This month, we got a red kid-sized “Spoon It Up!” tool, a kid-sided “Cooking Fun” apron, and Family Place Cards that the kids can use for Thanksgiving dinner.

Kidstir also sends full-color recipe cards with easy step-by-step instructions and photos. All of these recipes look delicious!

I also like the quick and easy shopping list that you get each month.

Zesty Cranberry Sauce

For this recipe, all you need is fresh cranberries, 1 orange, 1/2 cup of maple syrup, and 1 cinnamon stick. These are all kid-friendly ingredients! The included red spoon is perfect for stirring up this cranberry sauce.

Awesome Apple Stuffing

For this recipe, you need butter, apple cider, 1 egg, 1 onion, garlic cloves, celery, 2 apples, minced sage/rosemary/thyme, parsley sprigs, bread crumbs, salt and chicken broth. This is a bit more of an involved recipe, but my kids love it when they get to measure and poor ingredients. I just have to get them to perfect cracking eggs. :)

Popcorn Bread

This recipe requires 1 egg, milk, popcorn kernels, vegetable oil, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt. I looove the idea of popcorn bread instead of traditional cornbread – especially for kids. We can't wait to try this recipe!

In Summary: We really liked the Thanksgiving Theme, useful tools (spoon, apron) that we can use over and over again. I also thought the Thanksgiving placecards were super cute! This month's Kidstir box will help us prepare a nice kid-friendly, and kid-prepared Thanksgiving feast. With the holidays coming up, Kidstir would make a great Christmas gift for your kids, grandkids, nieces, or nephews! It's a great way to spend quality time with your kids and they also learn lifelong kitchen skills at the same time.

The Fish Food and Animal Crackers snacks are kid favorites that we usually buy at the grocery store. My kids were pretty jazzed to see they could make them from scratch themelves!

We also got 3 adorable fish cutters to make our Fish Food.

kidstir review - snack happy (11) (Custom)

We chose to make the Fish Food recipe because my kids looooove cheese and Goldfish crackers. :) My 6-year old was all about cutting these fish out.

Here's one of the fish on it's sides.

After baking these, the fish puffed up nicely. As you can see, our fish were of varying thicknesses, but they still turned out great! My kids gobbled them up!

What did we think of the Kidstir Snack Happy Box?

This Kidstir box did not disappoint! You can't go wrong with snack recipes for kids. While we didn't capture photos for the other 2 recipes, the Fish Food recipe was worth the box alone! It's a recipe I can use for years to come and I love that this fish crackker recipe doesn't include any preservatives or food coloring!

This box included 3 recipes that can be added to our Kidstir binder. Kidstir will send you a cute recipe binder if you sign up for a 12-month subscription. We also got a y-peeler and a small ice cream scoop!

kidstir review - smoothies (6) (Custom)

I actually just found out about a y-peeler after doing some research on how to cut butternut squash on YouTube. This y-peeler is very kid friendly because it is plastic! This y-peeler is for cutting cucumbers.

kidstir review - smoothies (7) (Custom)

Here is a cute, kid-sized ice cream scoop. Of course my kids went wild when they heard that this month's Kidstir box was going to include ice cream as part of the recipes!

kidstir review - smoothies (8) (Custom)

We also got these fun, colorful Party Straw decoration to punch-out. This kept my kids busy while I set up for our first recipe.

kidstir review - smoothies (9) (Custom)

I love how Kidstir include a shopping list. When I plan my weekly menu, it's easy for me to reference this shopping list so I can include whatever recipes I need in my Shipt delivery. If you haven't heard about Shipt yet, it's a grocery delivery service that let's you order your groceries online. Your groceries will be delivered usually in the next 2-3 hours. It saves me a ton of time because I don't have to spend 2 hours at the grocery store each week.

kidstir review - smoothies (3) (Custom)

Of the 3 recipes, my kids chose to make the S'more Shake, first (of course!). You'll see this recipe in action to follow, but we also made the Purple Power and Summer Cooler recipes which were very simple AND tasty!

Kidstir S'more Shake

The first step was to smush the graham crackers. Since we are gluten free, we had a box of Schar Gluten Free Graham Crackers on-hand. My kids took a rolling pin to crush these graham crackers in a sandwich bag.

The next step was to toast marshmallows in the toaster oven for 2-3 minutes. My daughter put the marshmallows on the baking pan.

kidstir review - smoothies (14) (Custom)

You have to keep your eye on these little babies in the toaster oven, or they will burn! This is how they turned out. I had never thought of “roasting” marshmallows in the toaster oven!

kidstir review - smoothies (15) (Custom)

The next step was to scoop out the ice cream with Kidstir's ice cream scoop. This scoop was a bit difficult for my kids to use, so I ended up using my own ice cream scoop.

kidstir review - smoothies (17) (Custom)

We did manage to get one scoop of ice cream into the blender with the kid-sized scoop.

kidstir review - smoothies (18) (Custom)

The recipe also called for milk. My kids really love measuring and pouring liquids.

kidstir review - smoothies (19) (Custom)

Then we added the toasted marshmallows.

kidstir review - smoothies (21) (Custom)

Then we gave the blender a spin!

kidstir review - smoothies (28) (Custom)

While the blender was going, my kids tooked the crushed graham crackers and put them on a plate.

kidstir review - smoothies (22) (Custom)

And then they took their glass cups and diped them in milk.

kidstir review - smoothies (23) (Custom)

The milk acted as an adhesive so the graham cracker could stick to the rim of the glass.

kidstir review - smoothies (24) (Custom)

kidstir review - smoothies (25) (Custom)

This graham cracker rim turned out pretty nicely!

kidstir review - smoothies (26) (Custom)

We added the S'more Shake to the rimmed glass.

kidstir review - smoothies (29) (Custom)

Then topped the shakes off with toasted marshmallow.

kidstir review - smoothies (30) (Custom)

The kids loved adding their Summer Sips straws (decoration and all!) to their glasses. This shake was quite a treat and my kids gulped it down and asked for more!

kidstir review - smoothies (34) (Custom)

The S'mores Shakes recipe card also had a recipe for actual s'mores you can make in your toaster oven. We didn't have mini chocolate chips, but had mini M&M's on hand.

kidstir review - smoothies (35) (Custom)

Once they were toasted, we had indoor S'mores to go with our S'more Shakes!

kidstir review - smoothies (36) (Custom)

This was the final product – and it was delicious!

kidstir review - smoothies (37) (Custom)

At first glance, Kidstir seems a bit pricey for the actual materials you get in the box. BUT, the experience that I had with my kids in the kitchen was invaluable. Not only did we get some recipes that we really loved, but my kids did learn some kitchen skills at the same time.

Kidstir would be great for weekend bonding time with your kids, or for long summer days where summer boredom sets in. Their kid-friendly recipes and tools are really hard to find elsewhere.

Right now, you can coupon code SHOP30 at checkout and get 30% off the first month of your new Kidstir subscription!
